What Is Pet Insurance?
Raising happy, healthy pets is expensive. Pet insurance is a type of policy that you can purchase to help cover the cost of veterinary care for your pet. Like other types of insurance, you pay a monthly or yearly premium, and depending on the policy you choose, get coverage for a range of medical expenses for your pet, — everything from late night emergencies to routine care.
What Type of Pet Insurance Should I Get?
When it comes to coverage, you have options:
Accident
Accident-only plans provide coverage for medical expenses related to accidents or injuries that your pet may suffer. It typically covers the costs of emergency treatments, such as surgeries, hospitalization, medications and diagnostic tests, that result from accidental injuries, such as broken bones, poisoning and bite wounds. Accident-only plans are usually less expensive than comprehensive plans and may be a good option for pet owners who are primarily concerned about unexpected injuries or accidents.
Accident and illness
Accident and illness pet insurance provides coverage for both accidental injuries and illnesses that your pet may experience. This type of policy usually covers a wide range of medical expenses — including diagnostic tests, surgeries, hospitalization, medications and ongoing treatments. Accident and illness pet insurance policies typically have a higher premium than accident-only plans but offer more comprehensive coverage. These policies may cover conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, allergies and hereditary diseases, in addition to accidental injuries.
Wellness
A wellness pet insurance plan provides coverage for routine or preventative care for your pet. This type of policy is designed to help pet owners manage the costs of routine veterinary care — like annual exams, vaccinations and preventative medications. A wellness pet insurance plan is typically purchased as an add-on to a comprehensive pet insurance policy, rather than as a stand-alone policy.
