www.backblaze.com – www.spideroak.com – When is the last time you backed up your important data? I’m talking about things that cannot be reinstalled. I know people who have never done it at all, because they simply don’t know how or where to do so! I’m about to tell you about a way you can do offsite backups easily. chris.pirillo.com Distributed by Tubemogul.

I’ved used CDRWs that lasted about 8 years of periodic use. I backup everyway I can. Internal, exteranl HD, online backup (not subscribed = limited capacity), and CD/DVD. What I have decided to start doing is transition from DVD/CD to flash. Also I will ultimately backup to online storage, but will buy it all used. I am going to replace the drives every 4 years. So my net loss is minimized.

Yep.. DVDs do get dirty or scratched if not taken care of properly. Thats why after you make the backup you have to put it away so that nothing can happen. Also you have to remember that recordable media has a limited lifespan. Not sure how long they last, but it’s not forever.

DVDs gets dirty or damaged. HD internal or external fail. Off site services can go out of business or be destroyed. Multiple backup points are critical if the data is important. Remember the history of the internet and why the military created it in the first place… If the country gets nuked, the military’s comm and data network wouldn’t get totally knocked out. Same rule applies today.

Backups
Offsite: Not all my files, but a fare portion of them.
Onsigth: External HD & Internal HD.
Disk: I have CDs and DVDs. Yes I have platters that are at least 5 years old so every now and then when I need to I use the CDs. DVD and BlueRay (when it gets -$) can read a CD/CDR/RW.

I didn’t like backblaze’s service.. it takes almost a week and a half to get everything backed up, and my MBPs drive is dying soon, so I purchased a 1TB MyBook instead. BB also doesn’t give refunds.. damn them

Thats cool.
Except usb flash drives are getting pretty big and are extreemly reliable and if you keep it attached to yourself in some way then only a determined thief will steal it.
Keep 2 backups too. On a disk of some sort and another place. Though you could call this the other place.
Usefull vids as always.

i really dont see the point. Whats wrong with an external hard drive? Its not like someones gonna rob my house and take my hdd, or a meteor’s gonna crash a destroy the hdd (which will prob kill me too).

Everyone should know that just like something could happen to your computer, something could happen the the online back up services computers. Best way to back up your stuff is to do it onto medias like dvd. Only then will your data be protected.

Backups?….
Backups?…..
We don’t need no stinking backups!
NO! save everything in one place!
Dont use raid 0 or 1 or any of those..
no use RAID STUPID!
where use use several hard disks to build a very instable tower to put the actual disk on so it almost certinly will tip over and break destroying all your data all at once
Backups are for pussies! :3
